Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

The art and science of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (TCM) began over 3000 years ago. Today, the practice of Acupuncture is firmly established in over ninety countries around the world, and is recognised by the World Health Organisation.

TCM has identified a number of energy pathways (meridians) which traverse the body, and along which flows energy or life-force called qi (chi). While this energy remains strong, free flowing and balanced, the body and mind remain healthy. If qi becomes disordered in some way, as a result of "poor living", stress, overwork, injury, poor nutrition, shock etc, then illness may result.

Along the length of each meridian are found special points of energy confluence, known as acupuncture points. Each point has a specific effect on energy balance. At the start of each treatment, the practitioner uses pulse and tongue diagnosis to formulate an understanding of the unique imbalances of the patient. This individual picture is then used to select specific acupuncture points to restore balance.

Fine, stainless steel acupuncture needles are inserted into the points, and left in place for up to twenty minutes. The number of needles used usually varies from 2 to 12. By stimulating the points with the needles, the body is gently encouraged to return to a state of harmony and balance. Symptoms of ill health disappear.

Rigorous scientific research has confirmed that acupuncture promotes the production of natural substances to relieve pain, regulate nerve transmission, enhance the immune system, regulate hormones and blood flow, release natural anti-inflammatories, relax muscle spasm and elevate mood.

Acupuncture may be used for all ages, and during pregnancy. For babies and small children, Torbay Acupuncture uses a needle free laser to stimulate the acupuncture points.

All needles used at the clinic are sterile disposable needles, used for one treatment only.

The World Health Organisation recognises acupuncture as effective in the treatment of a wide range of health problems including:

pain and injury
anxiety, depression, insomnia
migraine and headaches
asthma
female health conditions including menstrual disorders, PMS, endometriosis, infertility, menopausal difficulties
morning sickness
digestive disorders
poor immunity
cardiovascular problems
