Amenorrhoea

Healthy women of a reproductive age (approx 13 – 50) should have a period every month, unless they are pregnant, breastfeeding, nearing the menopause or have just started menstruating (at which times menstruation can be erratic). If the periods stop and their absence cannot be explained by pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause or the use of artificial hormones, the condition is called Amenorrhea. Sometimes a seemingly healthy woman will stop menstruating, but more often a lack of periods is part of an overall picture of ill health which may include underweight, extreme stress and nervous exhaustion, iron deficiency anemia or polycystic ovarian syndrome. This type of amenorrhea, occuring after years of healthy menstruation is called Secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea is the name given to a condition in which a teenage girl has never had periods.
