Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is “period
pain”. It can be classified
as :
*primary dysmenorrhea – severe and frequent period
cramping caused by severe and abnormal uterine
contractions.
Experienced throughout menstrual
life.
*Secondary dysmenorrhea – period pain which begins
later in the reproductive life, after years of previously normal
periods. May be secondary to new conditions such as endometriosis or
pelvic inflammatory disease.
Common Dysmenorrhea symptoms
include:
*Cramping or dragging pain in lower abdomen, lower
back and thighs
*Nausea and
vomiting
*Faintness and
fainting
*Diarrhea
*Fatigue
Traditional Chinese Medicine understands period pain as
resulting from obstruction of the flow of energy (qi) and blood in the
meridians – “where there is obstruction, there is pain”. Obstructed flow can result from
stagnation of liver energy (often resulting from emotional disharmony);
or from a weakness and deficiency of qi and blood, as a result of
exhaustion and adrenal fatigue.
Treatment
A combination of naturopathic medicine and Traditional
Chinese Acupuncture. A
warming, qi-tonifying diet may be recommended for “deficiency” type
period pain. Nutritional
supplements including magnesium, and selected essential fatty acids,
along with Chinese or Western herbal
medicine.
Acupuncture is usually weekly, and may involve
moxibustion. An improvement
may be anticipated in one to two menstrual
cycles.
